Shadows-on-the-Teche will be hosting a variety of activities in the upcoming fall months. From educational lectures to arts and craft fairs, we've gathered the complete list of events into this quick guide for you to make planning your visit easier. 

(Note: The following events are listed in order of date occurrance.)

 

1) Shadows Education Lectures:

The Shadows-on-the-Teche was recently awarded a Rebirth Grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to offer a fall lecture series centered on education in Louisiana. 

  • For the first of this three-part series, Ruth Foote will lead a discussion on the 76 black students who integrated the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 70 years ago on Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Desegregation of UL Lafayette lecture.
  • On Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., the lecture Schooling in the Antebellum South will feature Dr. Sarah Hyde who will explore private and public education systems before the Civil War in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
  • Then Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m., the Education and Preservation to Heal Communities lecture with Leona Tate, one of the first African Americans to attend a white-only school in Louisiana and founder of the Leona Tate Foundation for Change, discusses the integration of New Orleans and the impact of historic preservation on healing communities. 

All three lectures will take place at the Shadows Visitor Center (320 E. Main St.).

 

2) Shadows Farm Fest:

The Shadows and the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival & Fair Association will host this family-friendly event will take place on Thurs., Sept. 26, from 4 - 8 p.m.

Once through the gate, attendees can enjoy a variety of games from old-fashioned carnival ones to Farm Fest staples, like Magic Fishing and Rubber Duck Pull. Hang out with the Frosted Apron and decorate a dessert. Stop in at the art tent for face painting, rock decorating, and more crafting. 

Pick a number at the Sugar Cube Sweepstakes, where everyone is a winner. What’s Farm Fest without a petting zoo? This year, Shadows is excited to welcome back 2KB Farm and Petting Zoo who are bringing the farm with them. Attendees will get a chance to see goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, pigs, and miniature ponies. Balloon animals are back as well.

Attendees can enjoy burgers, hot dogs, chili Fritos, and other festival fare along with cold beverages, including beer and wine. Live entertainment will be on the stage during the entire event. 2NL Jazz Combo will play from 4 - 6 p.m. and Andy Smith will play from 6 - 8 p.m.  Admission is $10 per family. Tickets for food and games will be available for purchase. Minors must be accompanied by adults. Games stop at 7 p.m. 

 

3) Shadows Arts & Craft Fair:

Come spend the day in downtown New Iberia with your family and friends while supporting local artists, craftsmen, and Shadows-on-the-Teche. The fall arts and crafts fair will take place in the Shadows gardens on Sat., Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. 

Vendors from around Louisiana, including the L’Acadian Art Guild, will display and sell their original work. A variety of hand-crafted products will be available for sale, and just in time for you to start your holiday shopping. 

Original art and woodwork, handmade jewelry, and candles make perfect gifts for friends and family. Children’s clothing, bows, headbands, and dolls are great stocking stuffers for little ones. Homemade preserves, jellies, salsa, and oils are just the things for those on your list that have everything else.

Admission to the fair is $5 for ages 13 and over, and free for anyone 12 and under. Food and dessert vendors will also offer tempting choices. Once you’ve shopped ‘til you dropped, take a short walk to Bouligny Plaza for the first day of the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff.
