During your visit to Iberia Parish, drop by the village of Loreauville, which offers traditional Louisiana culture, sugar cane farming, a winding bayou, boat building facilities, and annual celebrations for Mardi Gras and Zydeco legend Clifton Chenier.
Loreauville was first known as Picotville. In the 1870s it was named after Frenchman Ozaire Loreau who gave property to the Catholic Church and its cemetery. Construction of a bridge over the Bayou Teche was completed in 1899. When Loreauville was incorporated on April 23, 1910 the population count was 291. The 2010 Census population count was 887. Since Loreauville has fewer than 1,000 residents, it is still classified as a village.
The surrounding area hosts several ship building companies, including Neuville Boat Works, Inc., Breaux Brothers Enterprises, Inc. and Breaux’s Bay Craft Inc., as well as shallow water propulsion outboard manufacturers Gator-Tail and Pro-Drive.
