Ornithologist Mike Musumeche recorded about 260 species of birds on Jefferson Island over the years. Click here to see the latest sightings on eBird.

According to Mike Richard, owner of Rip's Rookery and Rip Van Winkle Gardens, some migratory birds start coming back in late February, depending on the winter.

"We have some species that stay all year," he says. " If you check the January observation notes from Mike Musumeche you will see that many are here despite the cold. The big numbers are in late March through May while the nesting and rearing occurs. We have birders here every day even now."
