World Championship Gumbo Cookoff
Oct. 8-9, 2016
New Iberia, La.

By Brittany Racca

Ah, Fall. Leaves changing color, schools back in session and in Louisiana, gumbo weather arrives. Anyone from the South will tell you, there's nothing quite like sitting outside on a cold Fall night, gathered around a cozy fire chatting and catching up with friends and family while the cook for the night stirs the gumbo pot. It's a tradition in and of itself and one that Iberia Parish celebrates every year with the annual World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off.

Beginning Saturday the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce will host its 27th annual World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off. Taking over historical downtown Main Street, the three day event features the coming together of locals and visitors to celebrate Cajun cuisine and music. The main event happens Sunday with 100 teams competing to call themselves "champions" with the best gumbo in the world. Click for a full list of Gumbo Cookoff events.

If you'd like to try your hand at making your very own World Championship gumbo follow the recipe below and see if you have what it takes to be crowned King or Queen of gumbo!
