Summer is here! The Isle of Iberia RV Resort has a ton of fun events planned this summer and their headliner is the Beats on the Bayou Concert series. Check out the list below of the musicians performing.

Isle of Iberia:

The Isle is a full-service campground just north of Highway 90 (Exit #126) with 30 and 50 amp hookups. Pull through and back in camp sites are available. Check-in is at 2 p.m. with check-out at 11 a.m.

During your stay enjoy playing on the playground, fishing in the catch and release pond, relaxing at the swimming pool with splash pad, lazy river, and swim up bar. Adjoining the pool area, the clubhouse has a concession stand, covered indoor/outdoor meeting areas and band/DJ stage.

From shrimp to sugar, gumbo to getaways, get ready to fall for Iberia Parish in this quick guide!

1. Delcambre Shrimp Festival

In August, shrimp rules with one of the best five-day festivals in South Louisiana. The Delcambre Shrimp Festival has gained its popularity by serving up a variety of delicious dishes and top notch entertainment including national recording artists.

Enjoy signature shrimp dishes like boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp sauce piquante, shrimp salad and many more, prepared by volunteer members of the festival association. If you’re not in the mood for shrimp, vendors also offer a variety of other “festival” foods, beer, cold drinks and water.

2. Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival

September brings the first true tendrils of fall with the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival (September) kicking off the season of one of the state’s premiere industries. For 80 years, the festival has brought together sugar producing parishes to honor the sugar industry with royalty, delicious foods, Cajun entertainment and a great time.

Fais-do-do’s, parades, carnival and more are just the start of what the festival has to offer.

3. World Championship Gumbo Cookoff

October calls forth more than ghosts and pumpkin spice everything in the south, it’s gumbo season. It’s no surprise the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff calls Iberia Parish home for more than 30 years. Every year, on the second weekend in October, the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce hosts the cookoff in Bouligny Plaza on New Iberia’s historic and award-winning Main Street.

Saturday is fondly dubbed “Cajun Creole Foodfest” with teams cooking their favorite Cajun and Creole dishes for lunch, including two mini-competitions, “Meanest Beans” and “Youth Gumbo Cookoff” throughout the day. The main event happens on Sunday with the judging of more than 100 types of gumbos. Teams are divided between professional and amateur and are required to cook a minimum of 60 quarts. Visitors can try as many types of gumbos as their hearts desire.

Other fall events include pumpkin patches, Halloween storytime event “Terror on the Teche,” trick-or-treating at the Isle of Iberia RV Resort and countless other fun activities for the entire family.

The Bayou Teche Museum is pleased to announce that Ana Moreno-Bellomy has been appointed as the museum’s new Executive Director.

The Bayou Teche Museum’s board appointed Ana to replace Marcia Patout who served as director for the past 11 years. Working as director will be new ground for Ana who worked as a Global Events Project Manager in the fast paced, high-tech industry and most recently as administrative assistant at the Museum. Ana brings a wealth of administrative experience and managerial knowledge.

Ana holds both Business Administration and Marketing Degrees and has a track record of delivering exceptional results in previous leadership roles. Her commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment aligns with the Museum’s values and culture.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ana to this new role in our museum,” said Larry Hensgens, Bayou Teche Museum Board President. “We are confident that her skills will be an asset to the museum’s growth, and we are confident that together, we will achieve remarkable milestones and create new opportunities for the museum.”

In her new role, Ana will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day functions of the museum as well as being the point person for the annual Gala and other Museum activities. Ana was already a part of the Museum staff and was excited to take on this new role.

The Bayou Teche Museum Board of Directors looks forward to working with Ana and continuing to contribute to the museum’s growth and success.

Are you ready for a Holiday and Winter season full of family events and fun? The City of New Iberia is returning with the Downtown Advent Activities from Dec. 1-21, 2024. 

Each day will offer a different Christmas and/or winter themed activity for citizens to participate in. This will be a great way to join the community for a fun time. Activities offered will include a movie night, Christmas crafts, hot cocoa night and more holiday fun. There will opportunities for prizes on competition nights as well!

Starting Nov. 30, visit the event’s Facebook page daily at 11 a.m. for the live video where they will open each advent box to announce the activity, details and time for the following day just like a traditional advent calendar. 

Thanks to their sponsorship drive, all activities will be free this year and all materials will be provided, but a few events will require registration due to space availability. One will require a registration hold but that will be refunded upon arriving. Specifications will be announced during the lives. Weekday activities will usually begin around 5:30 p.m. to allow the entire family to participate, with weekends offering daytime options around mid afternoon.

About the Event:

The event is organized by a board of community activists as well as the City of New Iberia. The idea came about from Teresa Courtois, who wanted to give her children visiting home during lockdown, something fun to do for the holidays when businesses were closed. She realized this would be a great community event on a larger scale. 

“New Iberia Mayor Freddie Decourt is a huge advocate for our city, constantly thinking of new ideas that our city can do that nobody surrounding is doing, to make us unique and entice visitors” Courtois said.

“I felt this is a great community builder, to hopefully help our citizens to take some pride in all of the things we have going for us, as well as draw visitors who live in nearby cities and he was very interested in bringing this to fruition.”

Music on Main

Music on Main will feature live musical performances by two dynamic local favorites: The Eighties Experience and 5th Avenue, alongside a special set by comedian Jerrod Guillory. 

Attendees can expect a fun-filled night of entertainment while supporting a worthy cause. All proceeds from the event will go towards the continued expansion of the Bayou Teche Museum, particularly its work on the Doc Voorhies Wing, and other enhancements to preserve the rich cultural and historical treasures of the New Iberia area.

The museum is offering three sponsorship levels for those wishing to show their support:

• Gold ($1,000)
• Silver ($500)
• Bronze ($250)

Sponsorship will not only assist with covering the costs of the event but also enable the museum to further its efforts in showcasing the region’s unique history. By becoming a sponsor, individuals and businesses contribute to the ongoing preservation and promotion of local cultural assets while gaining recognition as community supporters. Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and the museum encourages those interested to reach out as soon as possible.

The 2nd International French Bread Festival is returning to Jeanerette on Sat., Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., under the Main Street Pavilion (1630 Main St., Jeanerette). 

This historic cultural event, Louisiana’s first of its kind, celebrates the world of French Breads. It will kick off with the “Blessing of Our Daily Bread” ceremony, followed by live music performances from various artists throughout the day including Lil Nate & the Zydeco Big Timers. Back by popular demand, Zydeco’s Wayne Singleton and Same Ol’ 2-Step will return performing both old and new Zydeco hits.

Festival-goers can look forward to a chop-style competition where chefs will showcase their culinary skills using French breads as their main ingredient, all under the watchful eyes of “celebrity” judges. Lagniappe Market Row will feature top-notch vendors offering a diverse selection of delicious foods, local art and crafts, and a stunning display of vintage vehicles. Sports enthusiasts will have a dedicated College Football Game Day section, allowing them to catch every thrilling play on the massive Jumbotron while enjoying the festival. 

The festival’s grand highlight will be the exhilarating Zydeco competition, where the festival will crown the 2nd French Bread Festival Queen and King.

The “Bee Healthy Hive” returns and is dedicated to community wellness, staffed with health care professionals offering resources that align with the festival’s blended theme, “Healthy Me, Healthy You, Healthy Community.” Kids in the KidZone will have a blast with Dr. Honey Bee.

The Bayou Teche Museum is pleased to announce receipt of a $25,000 grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This award will allow the museum to work on the museum’s history kiosks. When completed, the local community and visitors will be able to access the history and culture of the Bayou Teche Region from interviews recorded with individuals who lived or may still live in this area.

Shadows-on-the-Teche will be hosting a variety of activities in the upcoming fall months. From educational lectures to arts and craft fairs, we’ve gathered the complete list of events into this quick guide for you to make planning your visit easier. 

(Note: The following events are listed in order of date occurrance.)

1) Shadows Education Lectures:

The Shadows-on-the-Teche was recently awarded a Rebirth Grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to offer a fall lecture series centered on education in Louisiana. 

• For the first of this three-part series, Ruth Foote will lead a discussion on the 76 black students who integrated the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 70 years ago on Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Desegregation of UL Lafayette lecture.
• On Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., the lecture Schooling in the Antebellum South will feature Dr. Sarah Hyde who will explore private and public education systems before the Civil War in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
• Then Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m., the Education and Preservation to Heal Communities lecture with Leona Tate, one of the first African Americans to attend a white-only school in Louisiana and founder of the Leona Tate Foundation for Change, discusses the integration of New Orleans and the impact of historic preservation on healing communities. 

All three lectures will take place at the Shadows Visitor Center (320 E. Main St.).

2) Shadows Farm Fest:

The Shadows and the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival & Fair Association will host this family-friendly event will take place on Thurs., Sept. 26, from 4 – 8 p.m.

Once through the gate, attendees can enjoy a variety of games from old-fashioned carnival ones to Farm Fest staples, like Magic Fishing and Rubber Duck Pull. Hang out with the Frosted Apron and decorate a dessert. Stop in at the art tent for face painting, rock decorating, and more crafting. 

Pick a number at the Sugar Cube Sweepstakes, where everyone is a winner. What’s Farm Fest without a petting zoo? This year, Shadows is excited to welcome back 2KB Farm and Petting Zoo who are bringing the farm with them. Attendees will get a chance to see goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, pigs, and miniature ponies. Balloon animals are back as well.

Attendees can enjoy burgers, hot dogs, chili Fritos, and other festival fare along with cold beverages, including beer and wine. Live entertainment will be on the stage during the entire event. 2NL Jazz Combo will play from 4 – 6 p.m. and Andy Smith will play from 6 – 8 p.m.  Admission is $10 per family. Tickets for food and games will be available for purchase. Minors must be accompanied by adults. Games stop at 7 p.m. 

3) Shadows Arts & Craft Fair:

Come spend the day in downtown New Iberia with your family and friends while supporting local artists, craftsmen, and Shadows-on-the-Teche. The fall arts and crafts fair will take place in the Shadows gardens on Sat., Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. 

Vendors from around Louisiana, including the L’Acadian Art Guild, will display and sell their original work. A variety of hand-crafted products will be available for sale, and just in time for you to start your holiday shopping. 

Original art and woodwork, handmade jewelry, and candles make perfect gifts for friends and family. Children’s clothing, bows, headbands, and dolls are great stocking stuffers for little ones. Homemade preserves, jellies, salsa, and oils are just the things for those on your list that have everything else.

Admission to the fair is $5 for ages 13 and over, and free for anyone 12 and under. Food and dessert vendors will also offer tempting choices. Once you’ve shopped ‘til you dropped, take a short walk to Bouligny Plaza for the first day of the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff.
