With so many fun things to do, summer is the perfect time to visit. We’ve created this handy guide to help you plan how to use those PTO days in our area this summer.
The unofficial rule is that every season is gumbo season in Acadiana, but sometimes the delicious dish is too hot for the strongest of us. Instead treat yourself to some icy goodness with a snowball from one of our drive through stops like Caribbean Ice Co. or Cool Scene.
Head to Bojangles Sushi & Oyster Bar for lunch or dinner, or grab a cool slice of pie at Cane River Pecan's Pie Bar, all located in our newly designated National Register Historic District. See other options on our dining page.
There’s a multitude of events going on during summer, it really depends on what you would like to do. Our numerous parish wide farmers markets are a fabulous way to get out of the house and shop locally, as well as eat fresh! Iberia Parish Parks & Recreation and the Iberia Parish Library also host various crafts and healthy living events that are either free or reasonably priced all summer long.
Isle of Iberia RV Resort’s summer concert series features a different local musician every weekend so break out those dancing shoes. Geaux Paddle Youth Workshop will teach kids aged 10-14 who have never paddled comfortable with paddling and then out enjoying Bayou Teche.
Chef Sheri L. Raleigh, Chef Instructor/Owner of Cast Iron Skillet Culinaire and founder of Gifts From the Ancestors Foodways Project will present a Louisiana Creole Foodways seminar in collaboration with Shadows on the Teche. The presentation will explore the Lorins and Trahan family heritage, trace food genealogy, and share Creole culture and cuisine.
Other summer events include the June “Stars and Stripes” musical celebration and annual Independence Day activities like the fishing rodeo and New Iberia 4th of July Parade.
The Delcambre Shrimp Festival ends summer on a high note with a carnival, shrimp cookoff, pageantry and nightly fais-do-dos. Check out our calendar to see what's going on each weekend!
The Great Indoors
New Iberia is known for great attractions and the good thing is, most are indoors! Bayou Teche Museum and Jeanerette Museum are air-conditioned havens on those hot days and Shadows-on-the-Teche and Conrad Rice Mill are cool out of the sun retreats. Although the majority of the attractions on Jefferson Island and Avery Island are outside, they do have components that are indoors. The Joseph Jefferson Home on Jefferson Island and the Tabasco® Museum on Avery Island both offer an AC respite from the heat. And, the best part is that all of our attractions are educational and kid-friendly!
Of course, there's always going to the beach at Cypremort Point State Park, the swim up bar, splash pad and lazy river at Isle of Iberia RV Resort or the pool at New Iberia City Park.
