The Iberia African American Historical Society (IAAHS) will host a free community-wide symposium in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the 1944 incident that resulted in the violent expulsion of all Iberia Parish’s black doctors and leaders of the local NAACP chapter.

The World Championship Gumbo Cookoff is embarking on its 30th year in New Iberia, and we’ve been hard at work perfecting the recipe for the perfect event in the south. Guest blogger Avery Grubb spoke with early participant (and winner of mulitple Gumbo Cookoffs) Kernis Louviere, legendary musician Chubby Carrier and past board member Bart Folse to discuss the beginnings of the festival and why it remains a cultural staple in our area.

Every spring, more than 240 species of birds flock back to Iberia Parish. Waterfowl, roseate spoonbills and snowy egrets are just a few of the species of birds who call the Bayou Teche Corridor of the Atchafalaya Loop home, and there are numerous locations where they can be found.
